Which AI Certification Is Right for Your Role in 2026?

Which AI Certification Is Right for Your Role in 2026?

The right AI certification depends on your role, not on which certificate is most famous. Non-technical professionals should start with a foundation-level certification such as EXIN BCS Artificial Intelligence Foundation; IT professionals and analysts should take Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals or AWS Certified AI Practitioner; engineers and data scientists should pursue AWS Certified Machine Learning – Associates or Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (beta); and auditors, risk and compliance professionals should look at ISACA’s Advanced in AI Audit (AAIA) or EXIN AI Compliance Professional.

Malaysia’s TalentCorp has estimated that around 697,000 jobs could be significantly affected by AI, digitalisation and the green economy within the next three to five years if workers do not upskill. The question is no longer whether to build AI skills, but which credential gives you the most relevant proof of them. Here is how to choose.

If you are new to AI (Business Analysts, Executives, Sales and Marketing, Consultants)

Start at foundation level. You need AI literacy — what AI can and cannot do, how to use AI tools productively, and the ethical basics — not model-building skills.

Recommended path

No prerequisites, no coding.

GenAI for Everyone

Build a solid understanding of AI and Generative AI concepts

Agentic AI for Non-Technical People

Develop practical AI interaction skills

EXIN BCS Artificial Intelligence Foundation Certification

Validate your knowledge and demonstrate industry-recognized AI competence

If you work in IT (IT Professionals, Managers, Solution Architects, Power Users)

You need vendor-grounded fundamentals: how AI services work on the platforms your company already runs.

Recommended path

One-day-level foundational certifications with no coding prerequisite.

Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals

Take Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901) if your organization primarily uses Microsoft and Azure technologies.

AWS Certified AI Practitioner

Choose AWS Certified AI Practitioner if your environment is AWS-based, to gain platform-aligned AI knowledge within your cloud ecosystem.

If you build AI systems (Data Scientists, AI Engineers, ML Engineers)

Foundational badges will not differentiate you. Employers hiring at this level look for advanced, hands-on certifications.

Recommended path

Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (beta)

Learn to build generative AI applications and AI agents on Azure, then earn this certification to validate your AI development expertise.

AWS Certified Machine Learning – Associates

Build foundational skills in machine learning, deep learning, LLM engineering, and MLOps before earning this certification to demonstrate your ability to develop and deploy AI solutions on AWS.

If you work in security (Security Analysts, Architects, Penetration Testers)

AI is now both an attack surface and a defence tool.

Recommended path

CompTIA SecAI+

Build expertise in AI security, governance, and risk management, then earn this certification to validate your ability to securely deploy, protect, and govern AI systems in modern enterprises.

If you work in audit, risk, or compliance (IT Auditors, Risk Managers, DPOs, CISOs)

The EU AI Act, ISO/IEC 42001, and growing regulatory expectations have created a new discipline: AI governance.

Recommended path

ISACA Advanced in AI Audit (AAIA)

Advance from traditional IT audit expertise to specialized AI governance and audit practices, then earn this certification to validate your ability to assess AI systems, risks, and controls.

EXIN AI Compliance Professional (AICP)

Build expertise in AI governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance, then achieve this certification to demonstrate your ability to ensure AI systems comply with legal, ethical, and industry standards.
